It’s called the Hidden Cup and it’s the same one that got me back into the game a year ago and worth an hour to check out if you want to see the highest level of play possible and the awesome community in full swing. The online and competitive scene has grown steadily over the past several years and one of the biggest (if not the biggest?) tournaments ever is coming up in the next few weeks. I never really play online except with a few friends to do team games against the AI, but there is a huge multiplayer scene that I may be brave enough to try sometime soon. It may seem like a lot to learn (and it is) but the game's tutorials gives you all the basics you need to win and the campaigns steadily introduce more complex concepts so that it never feels overwhelming. Maps are also randomly generated and introduces a sort of "rogue-like" sense of discovery and excitement that keeps me coming back to play “one more game”. Meta strategies about civilization picks and match ups, army composition and countering, economy balance and maintaining villager efficiency, microing units during actual battles, etc. There is so much depth to the game play that keeps the game fun, fresh and feeling different every time. However, over the last year, with Definitive Edition coming out and after watching some tournaments right at the start of Covid, I've being playing more regularly and come to really love and appreciate what is, the best RTS game ever. As I got older I switched over to the Total War series (starting with Rome) and never really went back.Ī got a few of the expansions that started coming out in the mid 10’s and played some campaign missions but never really got back into the game. I used to play Age of Empires II on my dad's work laptop about 20 years ago and would have a blast beating the campaigns and beating the easy AI.
